Evidence of Work:
During the past month we have been working on a rube Goldberg machine. Our first idea that we all agreed on was a theme of the wild west. We then made a blueprint of that design and began to work. Half way through the project on day 5 we decided to change the theme due to not many decoration ideas. We came up with a new theme that was arcade. Although the arcade design was easier to decorate we had to do it in half the amount because we changed it so late. We kept the first half of the machine but just redecorated it, but we had to redesign the lower half and ending steps. Our original ending step was to put a gun into a holster, however that would not fit the arcade theme. Instead we came up with the idea to have it end with a game over sign. After we completed the steps we started to paint and decorate the board. The first part is Donkey Kong themed which has a black background. The second part is Mario themed which has a green ground and blue sky background. |

Reflection:
Overall our group did a good job. However there were many things that we could work on. The main problem was that we should have worked on time management and coming up with a good theme in the beginning, not in the middle. This forced us to work twice as fast and hard, which would have been better if we did that from the beginning. In the first few days we started off slow and if we started faster we probably would have made a better machine. Another problem was our presentation and presenting. Our presentation ended up being one of the shortest presentation at the Physics night.Also we started off not knowing how to present well ,but as the night went on and we presented more, we got the hang of it. However most of the judges saw us in the first two presentations which were our worst ones. |
Concepts:
Speed/Velocity- Speed is the distance over time and velocity is the distance over time with a direction. The equation is V=d/t where V means velocity, d means distance, and t means time. This happen when the golf ball was traveling down the ramp at a speed/velocity.
Acceleration - How fast something increases speed. The equation is a=v/t where a means acceleration, v means velocity and t means time. This happens when the marble accelerates down the ramp.
Potential Energy- The energy an object has due to is position. The equation is PE=mgh where PE means Potential energy, m means mass, g means acceleration due to gravity, and h means height. This happens when the marble is about to fall, before it gets hit by the lever.
Kinetic Energy- The energy due to motion. The equation is KE=1/2 mv^2 where KE means Kinetic energy, m means mass and v means velocity. This happens when The marble is about to hit the next lever.
