Evidence of Work
During our climate change unit, we had to make a concept map that connected a lot of the terms that we used during the unit. Reflection:
This was a small project that we did over the course of the entire unit, adding a few new words every day or so. One peak of this project was that the time management was already planned because we did a few new words every day, so it was not procrastinated till the last minute before it was due. Another peak was that it helped me understand the content better by making the map. One pit was that I missed a day so I was behind on a few words. Another was that I did not have that much space to work with towards the end so it got a little crammed. |
Concepts
Climate System- The highly complex system consisting of five major components: the atmosphere, the hydrosphere, the cryosphere, the lithosphere and the biosphere, and the interactions between them. Atmosphere- The envelope of gases surrounding the earth or another planet. Plants and Animals- Animals breath in oxygen and out carbon dioxide and plants take in carbon dioxide and release oxygen to form part of the carbon cycle Humans- Human activities are a main cause of climate change such as burning of fossil fuels. Weather- Short term conditions in a specific place. Sun- The main source of energy for everything on earth. Albedo- How much something reflects. Energy Budget- The balance between the radiant energy that reaches Earth from the sun and the energy that flows from Earth back out to space. Long Wave Radiation- Radiation that comes from short waves coming from the sun being reflected. Short Wave Radiation- Energy from the sun. Earth-The planet that is being affected by climate change. Greenhouse gasses- Heat the Earth by trapping in the heat from the sun which is the cause for global warming. NO2- Nitrous oxide, a form of greenhouse gas. Water Vapor- A form of greenhouse gas. CO2-The main form of greenhouse gas. CH4- A form of greenhouse gas. Temperature- The average global temp has been increasing and in continuing to increase. Ice Covers- Ice covers are melting due to the increasing temperatures which is causing the oceans to rise. Mitigation- The action of reducing the severity, seriousness, or painfulness of something. Oceans- Cover most of the Earth and are responsible for capturing a lot of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. Fossil Fuels- Fuels such as gasoline which release greenhouse gasses when they are burnt. Sinks- Something that captures the carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. The oceans are a huge sink. Wind- A form of renewable energy. Nuclear Power- A form of renewable energy that leaves behind waste. Power Plant- A place that creates electricity by burning of fossil fuels or through renewable energy sources. Forests- Where a lot of the carbon is captured by trees and oxygen is released. A lot of forests are being destroyed by humans. Sea Level Rise- The rising sea levels due to ice caps and glaciers melting because of global warming. Ice Cores- A way that scientist can see the atmosphere from the past. |
