Abstract:
Pearl farming is the industry of making pearls using. This industry makes over 99% of the pearls sold today. Pearl farms are located all over the world in places that fit the needs of a farm such as clean, non contaminated water. The industry is supposed to have little to no impact on the environment but there is evidence to disprove that theory.

Research:
Pearl farming is the industry that is responsible for grafting pearl mollusks and producing cultured pearls. Only about 0.1% of the pearls sold today are actually natural pearls. Pearls are formed in bivalves when an irritant enters the shell. This irritant is usually a parasite. The bivalve coats the irritant with the material that the inside of the shell is made of as a defense mechanism.

Pearl farming begins with conducting a feasibility study to determine whether the proper conditions (financial, environmental, operational and biological) that allow pearl farming to be profitable exist for the situation in which you wish to farm. If the results of the feasibility study are positive, a farm site will be selected and the farm structure established. A source of pearl oysters must then be obtained. A new stock of young pearl oysters should be added each year to the existing pearl oysters on the farm, so that new cycles of grafting and harvesting can take place regularly. After young pearl oysters have reached about 2 years of age, they are ready for grafting, which starts the development of a cultured pearl. After an inspection 40 days after grafting to evaluate the results, the pearl oysters are kept on the farm for a further 12-24 months. The pearls are then harvested, and the pearl oysters that produce good quality pearls are grafted a second time.
The site of a pearl farm is very important because it affects how well pearl oysters grow, the quality of the pearls, how safe the farm is from theft or vandalism and how much it costs to operate the farm. Pearl oysters prefer clean, clear water far away from sources of contamination such as chemicals, oil, sewage or other pollution. Areas near large villages or towns will usually have some pollution, so farms should be located as far away as possible, or up-current from the source of pollution. The water has to be deeper than 75 ft because there needs to be enough room to hang farm lines. It is also good for a farm to be somewhere with a slight current because it will help supply constant oxygen and nutrients. There are also a lot more guidelines for where a pearl farms should be.

Pearl farming is considered to have a low potential for environmental impact. There is little use of chemicals in the farming of pearls. However there is evidence of environmental impacts from pearl farming in China and Japan where area surrounding pearl farms has been affected.
Conclusion:
Pearl farming is a huge industry that should not have an impact on the environment. This industry is a good one only if that fact is true and since in China and Japan there is evidence that it isn't as non impactful as it is supposed to be, there may need to be a few changes to the process to make it cleaner.
