Evidence of Work:
For this project we made a brochure of a made up underwater vacation destination. It did not have to be feasible and the only requirement was that it was underwater. I chose to do mine on the Hawaiian Emperor Chain which is the chain of underwater mountains that use to be islands north of the existing Hawaiian islands. I made mine a resort that was on the top of the closest mountain to the Hawaiian islands. Content:
The following terms are some of the underwater features that we could choose from for our project. We had to choose at least 8 features to include in our brochure and define them on the brochure. Black smoker- a type of hydro thermal vent typically found on the sea floor. These vents are often referred to as underwater geysers. Black smokers can get up to 180 feet tall, and they are also considered to have the highest temperature of the hydro thermal vents. White smoker- a hydro thermal vent emitting alkaline high-pH hydro thermal fluid on the ocean floor. These fluids are cooler (260–300°C) than those emitted by black smokers (360°C) and are sited away from the mid-ocean ridges. Ridges- A long narrow underwater mountain range Caves- A large underground chamber. Rift valleys- a large elongated depression with steep walls formed by the downward displacement of a block of the earth's surface between nearly parallel faults. Trenches- Deep depressions in the seafloor. Deep Sea Vents- Vents in the seafloor that where seawater contacts hot volcanic rock. Rifts - The zone on top of a ridge where the 2 plates are being puller apart. Continental slope- The slope between the outer edge of the continental shelf and the deep ocean floor. Seamounts- Underwater mountains formed by volcanoes that eroded away till the were below the surface. My underwater vacation spot was located on a seamount. Volcanoes- A mountain that has a vent through which lava, gasses etc are being released. Islands- a piece of land surrounded by water that was created by volcanoes. The Hawaiian islands are less than 20 miles from the underwater resort . Abyssal plains- An underwater plain on the deep ocean floor. Deep sea floor- The deepest parts of the oceans floor Coral reef- A ridge of rock in the sea formed by the growth and deposit of coral. Basin- A depression or dip in the earths surface. Continental shelf- The shallow ocean floor before the slope. Abyssal hills- Small hills on the seafloor of the abyssal plain. |
Reflection:
Like all other projects, this had its up and downs. One up was that it was a very fun and relaxing project because it was made up. Another up was that we had a lot of time to make it and make it look good.
There were also some downs, for example the palace that was doing my project on was not on a plate boundary or on a continental margin so a lot of the vocab was not applicable for my project. Also, i turned in my brochure without taking a picture of it so i cant upload one to the website.
